How Much Does Google Business Profile Setup Cost in Houston?

Creating a Google Business Profile is free — Google does not charge for it and never has. What Houston businesses pay a professional $150 to $500 for is the setup, category strategy, verification support and troubleshooting around it. Ongoing local SEO is a separate, recurring service, and neither one can guarantee verification or a ranking.

Two numbers matter here and they are frequently blurred together on purpose.

The Google Business Profile itself is free. Google does not charge to create, claim, verify, edit or manage a listing. If you receive a call saying your Google listing will be suspended unless you pay, that call is not from Google. It is one of the most persistent scams aimed at small businesses in the country.

Professional setup in Houston typically runs $150 to $500 as a one-time fee, and ongoing local SEO management runs $200 to $1,500 a month. You are paying for someone’s time, judgement and troubleshooting — never for the listing.

What businesses actually pay a professional to do

If the profile is free, what is the fee for? Concretely, this:

New-profile setup

Creating the listing from scratch: the correct business name (your real name, not your name plus keywords), service area or address configuration, hours, phone, website, categories, services, products and photos. An hour of work that determines how Google understands your business for years.

Existing-profile optimisation

Most Houston businesses already have a profile, auto-generated by Google or half-filled by someone years ago. Optimisation means auditing what is there, fixing the primary category, completing the empty sections, replacing bad photos, correcting hours, and making the details match the website exactly.

Verification support

Google decides how you verify — video walkthrough, phone, postcard, email, or manual review — and the method is not always the convenient one. Video verification in particular trips people up: it wants continuous footage showing your location or equipment, your business signage or branding, and you managing the business, in one unbroken take. Help here means knowing what the reviewer wants and preparing before you record, not after a rejection.

Category selection

This is the highest-leverage decision on the entire profile and the one most often wrong.

Your primary category has the strongest effect on which searches you appear in. “Fence contractor” and “fence supply store” surface for different queries. “Restaurant” and “Mexican restaurant” are not interchangeable. Choosing well means checking what your actual competitors in your part of Houston use, then picking on evidence rather than instinct. Secondary categories extend reach, but too many dilute it.

Services and products

The services section is a set of structured fields Google reads. Most profiles leave it empty, which throws away free relevance. Filling it in properly — every service you offer, each with a description written in the words customers use — is tedious and worth doing.

Description and photo optimisation

The 750-character description is not a ranking factor, but it is read by humans deciding whether to call. Photos are ordered by Google using signals you influence: quality, recency and volume. Ten good current photos beat two blurry ones from 2019 taken by a customer.

Review-request process

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals and the hardest to manufacture honestly — which is the point. Setup should leave you with a short review link you can text, a written routine for when to ask, and a clear rule: never buy reviews, never incentivise them, never write them yourself. Google detects it, and the penalty is worse than the deficit.

Duplicate and suspension issues

Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse Google. Suspensions happen — sometimes for a keyword-stuffed name, sometimes for an address problem, sometimes for no reason you can see. Both have formal resolution processes, both take patience, and both are where professional help is worth the most.

One-time setup versus ongoing local SEO

One-time setup Ongoing local SEO
Typical Houston cost $150–$500 once $200–$1,500/month
Categories and services Set correctly Reviewed and adjusted
Photos Initial set uploaded Added on a schedule
Posts You post, after a handoff Managed for you
Reviews You get a link and a routine Requests managed and monitored
Citations Not included Built and cleaned up
Competitor tracking No Yes
Suits Most small businesses Competitive categories, multi-location

Honest guidance: most Houston small businesses need the first column and a habit, not the second. Correct setup plus consistently asking happy customers for reviews outperforms a monthly retainer that produces posts nobody reads. Monthly management earns its money in genuinely crowded categories — personal injury law, HVAC, plumbing, dentistry — or when you are managing several locations.

Red flags and prohibited tactics

Some of these are wasteful. Some will get your profile suspended and your business significantly worse off than doing nothing.

  • “Guaranteed number one in the map pack.” Nobody controls this. Walk away.
  • Keyword-stuffed business names. “Houston Emergency Plumber 24/7 LLC” when you are registered as “Smith Plumbing” is a direct violation. It sometimes works briefly, and then the profile gets suspended.
  • Virtual offices and mailbox addresses. Using a rented address you do not staff is a violation, and Google actively hunts for it. A service-area business without a storefront should hide the address and set a service area — which is exactly what it is for.
  • Fake or incentivised reviews. Bought reviews, review-swap groups, discounts for a five-star. Prohibited, detectable, and the cleanup is worse than the original problem.
  • Someone else holding your profile. Never let an agency verify a listing under an account you do not control. Ownership belongs in your Google account.
  • Lead-gen listings. A “marketing” listing at your address that forwards calls to you and bills per lead is a duplicate that competes with your own profile.
  • Charging you a “Google fee”. There is no Google fee.

None of these are things Graphcast will do or recommend, on any budget, for any client.

What Graphcast charges

$350, flat, one time. That covers:

  • Claiming or creating the profile, and the recovery process if someone else holds it
  • Verification support, whatever method Google assigns
  • Primary and secondary categories chosen against what your Houston competitors actually use
  • Name, service area, hours and phone set correctly and matched to your website
  • Services and products filled out properly rather than left blank
  • Photos uploaded and ordered
  • A review link you can text to customers, and a routine for asking
  • The website linked — or a one-page site added if you do not have one
  • A 15-minute handoff so you can post updates yourself

No monthly fee unless you specifically ask for ongoing posting. Ownership lands in your Google account, not ours. Full detail on the Google Business Profile setup page.

If you are opening a new business, that setup is bundled with a one-page site and storefront signage in the Grand Opening Kit, because doing the three together saves work.

What the fee does not buy: verification, reinstatement, a ranking, or a spot in the map pack. Those are Google’s decisions. What it buys is a profile that gives you the best available shot at them, set up by someone who has done it before.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google charge for a Business Profile?

No. Creating, claiming, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free from Google, and always has been. If anyone tells you Google is charging you a fee for your listing, or calls claiming your listing will be removed unless you pay, that is not Google. Those calls are a long-running scam.

Can you guarantee my profile gets verified?

No, and neither can anyone else. Verification is entirely controlled by Google, and the method it offers — video, phone, postcard, email, or a manual review — is chosen by Google based on your business type and history. What professional help does is make verification more likely to go smoothly the first time: correct category, consistent details, appropriate evidence, and a fast, accurate response when Google asks for more.

Can you guarantee I appear in the map pack?

No. The three businesses shown in the local map results are chosen by Google based on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance you cannot change. Prominence takes reviews, citations and time. What setup controls is relevance — the right categories, complete services, accurate details — and that is a real advantage, not a promise of placement.

Do I need a website to have a Google Business Profile?

No, but profiles that link to a real, matching website tend to do better, and customers comparing two businesses usually pick the one with its own site. A one-page site is the cheapest way to close that gap, which is why our setup includes linking one if you have it, and why our Grand Opening Kit bundles both.

Is one-time setup enough, or do I need a monthly service?

For most Houston small businesses, correct setup plus a habit of asking for reviews is enough. Monthly management earns its cost in genuinely competitive local categories, or when you have several locations, an active posting strategy, or a history of suspensions. If a provider cannot explain what they would do each month beyond "posting", you are paying for activity rather than outcome.

My listing already exists and I cannot edit it. What now?

Very common. Google auto-creates profiles from public data, and old employees or previous marketing firms often still hold access. There is a formal claim-and-recovery process: you request ownership, the current owner is notified and has a window to respond, and Google adjudicates if they do not. It takes time, and it works. That recovery is part of what our flat fee covers.
